Weather

Real Wedding | Sydney + Evan

Evan and Sydney's oceanfront vows were followed by a colorful reception under a clear-top tent to accentuate the beauty of the night sky. Their decor incorporated their Maryland heritage by using crabs as their place cards, each one personalized with their guest's names. Little touches like that kept their destination wedding close to home.

This Week on the Outer Banks | June 19, 2020 - June 26, 2020

June 19th - June 26th, 2020

Happy Juneteenth! Juneteenth marks June 19th as a day that commemorates total freedom from slave trade in the United States when enslaved African-Americans in Texas were finally informed of the Emancipation Proclamation and that the Civil War had ended over two years prior. Juneteenth has been celebrated for over 150 years, initially by the more than 250,000 enslaved African-Americans who were still untold of their independence and now with celebrations, education, family gatherings and reflections for the improvement of the future.

Member Monday | Outer Banks Wedding Entertainment

Jeremy Russell of Outer Banks Wedding Entertainment is the go-to-guy for your wedding entertainment needs, from walking down the aisle to the first song you dance to as a newly-wedded couple. Outer Banks Wedding Entertainment offers a variety of packages that cover DJ Services, Vocals, a Full Band and even Lighting. In addition to singing and playing music on the Outer Banks, Jeremy is also a new Board Member of the Outer Banks Wedding Association. Visit his website (www.jeremyrussellmusic.com) to find out where you can see him play next!

How long have you been playing for weddings on the Outer Banks?

I started performing for weddings about 12 years ago - playing acoustic for friends and family ceremonies at first; pursuing music, DJ-ing, and weddings full-time several years later.

What makes the Outer Banks unique and special to you?

There’s a lot about the Outer Banks that makes it unique and special!  On the personal side, I have a huge extended family and a lot of them live here!  I also met my wife, a local girl, when I moved here as a teenager.  Add in world-class fishing, miles of beaches, and wide-open spaces - what’s not to love?

I think I love it here because of the OBX mentality – it’s a slower pace, people look out for each other, we’re hard workers, and we know how to have fun.

Do you have any advice for a couple booking your services?

My best advice for couples booking our services (or anyone’s really) would be to book early and ask lots of questions!  Most of our wedding dates are reserved 12-16 months in advance so it’s important to secure your date early.  It’s not every day that you plan a wedding and work with musicians and DJs so ask questions!

What trends are you most excited to see in future weddings?

I’m not much of a wedding trend follower or forecaster but I love how weddings are becoming more relaxed!  Smaller wedding parties, less formalities, and a heavy hors d’ourves meal, with “floating” seating (instead of a big sit-down dinner) make guests feel more at ease.

What makes Outer Banks Wedding Entertainment different from other vendors on the Outer Banks?

Clients like Outer Banks Wedding Entertainment because we offer all-inclusive packages that cover all their entertainment needs – one company to coordinate with, one contract, everything music.

We’re different from other vendors because of the wide array of services we offer; acoustic ceremonies and DJ services to full band receptions and uplighting!  Couples can book live music and a DJ dance party all in one package – the best of both worlds!  We also have a la carte options like wireless mics for your ceremony, “Be Your Own DJ” (we bring equipment, you provide the playlist), karaoke, and a professional uplighting system.

What’s one of your favorite songs to play?

My favorite songs to play at weddings are the ones that get the best crowd reactions – guests are often taken by surprise when I play acoustic versions of “I Want it That Way” or Shaggy’s “Angel” (full-on Shaggy voice) during the cocktail hour. At home my latest favorites to play are “Rumor” by Lee Brice and “Where Rainbows Never Die” by the SteelDrivers.

What has been one of your stranger song requests?

After playing and DJing weddings for the past decade I’ve had my fair share of odd song requests. The funny thing is that it’s usually a family joke or special song that ends up being a great moment.  My most-recent strange request was to play the commentary from when David Ortiz hit a grand slam in 2013 to tie in the ALCS game – odd yes, but the groom and his friends loved every second!

A cloudy weekend is followed by a beautiful, sun-shine filled week! Be sure to look out for the Full "Strawberry Moon" and Lunar Eclipse Friday night! However, don't expect a strawberry colored moon. The name originates from the short-lived strawberry season and being the last full moon of the Spring.

Styled Shoot | Drama Coqueena

This sophisticated glam black, white, and gold shoot breathes new life into beach wedding inspiration. Tucked into the dunes, the contrast of the dark colors against the sand, moody hues, and modern elements is perfection. There's so much to note: crystals, velvet bouquet ribbon, a black cake marked with gold speckles. This shoot shows the creative possibilities when it comes to design for an Outer Banks wedding, and it is so gorgeous we kind of think black was MADE for the beach.

Real Wedding | Allison + Alison

This sweet couple's love of the beach was the main inspiration for their oceanfront bash. The coral, peach, ivory and white palette with natural woods created a simplistic rustic elegance. We're crushing on the floating florals and that beautiful dance floor setting with the sweetheart table and lush wreath. Picture the fun they had as they celebrated with crashing waves just steps away!

Wedding Wellness Tips & Tricks

Navigating life in a world of social distancing will take some getting used to. Most industries and businesses are making drastic changes for the increased safety and well-being of their employees and clientele. At the Outer Banks Wedding Association, we are encouraging our members to do the same, and to follow in compliance with state mandated orders and practices.

Under Executive Order 121, weddings are subject to the mass gathering ban and may not consist of more than 10 people for the time being. For those who are having to postpone or plan weddings during this time, we have compiled some helpful tips for your future event.

First, if you plan on an event with 100+ guests, start planning now! Larger events will require longer lead times with more involved logistics due to Covid-19 safety. Also, be sure to factor staff into overall group size. You may even consider staggering staff entry and leave times to allow for more guests.

When looking for a venue, urge the use of a room or event space large enough to prevent crowding for the number of expected guests. Utilize the warmer months coming up for outdoor spaces and open air environments where guests won’t feel so cluttered. If the event does take place indoors, make sure the room has airflow with open windows and doors.

For ceremony seating, consider setting up small groups of chairs near one another while still accommodating the social distancing recommendations. For example, setting up columns of two chairs each with six-foot aisles in between. Think theater setup with an increased number of aisles. This way, guests can sit in pairs and still be a safe distance from potential “unknown” risks.

Regarding reception seating, keep tables six-feet apart and create 12-feet aisles wherever possible. Try to have multiple bars and serving areas to reduce lines of people waiting for food and drinks. You can even use tasteful tape markers to indicate how far apart guest should stand. If possible, add sneeze guards where necessary to reduce the spread of germs to staff.

For food service, it is important to restrict the number of people in the kitchen and preparation spaces to limit the number of people handling the food. If you choose to have a cocktail hour with passed hors d'oeuvres, use toothpicks for all finger foods so guests will refrain from touching the food directly. If you choose a buffet style dinner, provide clean serving utensils, or arrange for a staff member who is trained in safe food handling to serve at each station. Consider keeping the food on display low and restock more frequently to reduce the amount of food in contact with guests.

It is also important to have allocated staff for the sanitization of door handles, entry/exit points, bathrooms and to provide masks to guests and staff. For those with weddings in event homes, make sure to place disposable hand towels and products in all common areas.

At the Outer Banks Wedding Association, we are hopeful that you will choose the Outer Banks as your wedding destination and will also implement safety procedures at your event for the health of others. If you have any questions, please email us. If you would like to reach our vendors, please submit a contact form. We look forward to having you & your love is not canceled!

Real Wedding | George + Becca

It’s impossible to not ooh and ahh over George and Becca’s wedding. These lovebirds had the most flower-filled day. It starts with their ceremony site where guests caught vast views of the Currituck Sound and a lush pink floral installation around the tree. Moving to the tent, but not before grabbing a glass of champagne, the lushness continues with a floral wreath hanging above the dance floor and lounge, and a precious cake adorned with even more peonies. Luscious details aside, the couple was radiating with joy!
