Real Wedding | Courtney & Jeremy

Jeremy and Courtney's wedding theme wows us with its simple and modern elegance. They chose the venue because they loved the idea of getting married and having a reception right over the ocean. Black, gold, white, and gray kept things simple so that the natural beauty surrounding the pier could take center stage. But don't skim over the chic details - like marble plates and gold flatware - for their timeless affair!

Real Wedding | Adam & Sara

This spring wedding was inspired by the natural beauty of the Outer Banks. Adam and Sara let the character of their Roanoke Island venues shine by keeping a simple muted color palette. Their reception was adorned with charming florals and golden accents that matched the beauty of the venue. We're tickled muted pink to share their beautiful wedding day.

You're Engaged! Now What?

Most engagements occur during the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, with Christmas being the most popular day to put a ring on it as Queen “B” says, according to Wedding Pro.

Some spouses-to-be may already have their big day planned to the T, but others may have no idea where to begin! That is totally fine. The Knot’s 2019 study on Real Weddings found that the average engagement length for couples in the United States is 15 months. If you aren’t rushing to the altar, there is plenty of time to cross those key items off of your checklist before your wedding day arrives.

Photo: 1989

1. Relax!

After the year we’ve all had, take a breather! Enjoy your engagement and spending quality time with your fiancé. There is enough stress around the holiday season already, so taking the time time to focus on yourself will have you in a calm state-of-mind when the planning begins.

2. Think about When & Where

Ok, so you’ve opened you've exchanged gifts, said good riddance to 2020, probably drank 1 too many glasses of champagne at midnight, posted that #ringshot on Instagram and now you are ready to move full-steam ahead. What to do first? Here is where we come in! The chances are that if you are reading this, you already have the Outer Banks in mind for your wedding. I mean, what’s not to love about the rolling waves and the endless list of stunning backdrops for weddings here? Try to narrow down a season and a setting that you have in mind. There are pros and cons to every season here, and some may not mind the Summer heat, but others may prefer the more comfortable temps and smaller crowds of the off-season. The setting is also important to consider when it comes to making the venue decision. There are 125 miles from the 4X4 to Ocracoke so choosing a town and a setting is important. (Browse Ceremony & Reception Venues) Beach front, sound side, indoor, marina, vineyard, golf course, pier or event home, there are plenty of options. Each town offers something truly unique. Once that is decided, the venues available to host will be more clear.

Tip: If you don’t have a time preference, think about what florals you really like and choose a time of year when those are in season.

3. Set a budget.

Having a general dollar amount in mind will help you make important decisions, especially when it comes to your venue and guest count. Hiring a planner early on will make your engagement a sea breeze by having someone who knows other local vendors and their price points and who will make sure that you stay on budget. They will be in charge of finalizing wordy contracts and ensuring that everything is in place for your wedding. Browse our Planners & Coordinators here.

4. Pick Out A Theme!

When you think of themed weddings, they don’t always have to be over-the-top! There is so much variety with different themes, decor styles and colors that will make your wedding look put together in an elegant manner. (Check out this Garden Party Wedding or this Modern Black & Gold Golf Course reception). From modern to vintage, a rustic barn setting or boho beach vibes all around. Once a general theme is decided, everything else (florals, decor, paper details, gown colors, accessories, etc!) will follow.

5. Insure your Big Day

Weddings are investments, even if they are small. The Outer Banks is an unpredictable area, and definitely after this year, having a wedding insurance plan (often referred to as: special event insurance) in place in case something unfortunate happens is recommended. It doesn’t always have to be a hurricane or global pandemic, but even smaller things can impact your wedding day and could cause either a postponement or cancelation. Consult your planner if you have one, or your other vendors to ask them what insurance policies they have in place so that you don’t get overlapping coverage. There are great online resources and options available.

6. Attend a Wedding Show

In 2021, we are planning to host our annual OBX Wedding Fest in the Summer where you can get the chance to meet tons of local vendors in a laid-back setting. Stay tuned to @obxwa on Instagram and Like Us on Facebook for upcoming details and news!

Real Wedding | Matt & Corrine

This black, white, and gold wedding is a lovely edgy and elegant sound side affair. Our hearts are aching over their minimal, modern details! We swoon over how the transparent chairs pick up the colors of the golden light and reflect the whites and blacks that surround them. Matt and Corrine wanted their guests to feel relaxed, so they opted for an open seating plan, sushi for the cocktail hour, and hand-tossed pizzas for a fun addition to their menu.
