FROM THE COUPLE
Why they chose to wed on the Outer Banks
We each have been coming to the Outer Banks with our families since we were kids. We started vacationing there together since 2014, specifically in Avon. Each year we have returned, at least once, if not more. We had not even considered the Outer Banks as a wedding destination until we were on one of our trips to Avon that my wife stumbled upon yoga at the Koru Beach Klub. After attending the class she asked a few questions to Tami, the instructor and Koru owner, and returned to the house with an excitement I had not yet seen from her, especially because she didn’t even want a wedding! Immediately we set up an appointment with the amazing people at Koru and they allowed us to explore the venue, ask any questions and to give us all the information we needed. After that, our venue search was over, it just felt right. We knew that the Outer Banks and Koru Village were exactly what we wanted.
The inspiration behind their wedding day
We are a pretty simple, non-fancy, down-to-earth couple. But of course for our wedding we wanted it to be elegant but have a casual fun feel, especially since we are getting married at the beach! We bought a fixer-upper together a couple years ago so we love DIY-ing and designing spaces to our own style, so naturally that was our approach to our wedding. We wanted it rustic and minimalist, and to look natural and not overdone. We made all our of centerpieces and signage out of wood (Josh tirelessly sanded and stained everything!) and my cousin hand-painted all the lettering. I have always loved the classic combo of navy and blush, which was how we decided our wedding colors (and wedding party’s attire). I have also always loved that vintage/shabby chic look and love the combo of wood with lace and gold, and had white/ivory/blush flowers with greenery to keep it simple and natural.
We were also very lucky that the venue was so beautiful that we didn’t have to go crazy decorating everything--the beach view was the icing on the wedding cake! After six months of hard work, intense organization, and good teamwork, it all came together! Our wedding was the biggest “project” we’ve ever worked on together, and the end result really reflected our style and and felt very “us”.
